Taliban commander detained in Baghlan

PUL-I-KHUMRI (PANinfo-icon): A Talibaninfo-icon commander was detained along with his brother during an operation by US forces in Pul-i-Khumri, the capital of northern Baghlan province, officials said on Monday.

1st. Lt. Stefan, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) in Baghlan, said Mohammad Arif and his brother were arrested last night in third police district of Pul-i-Khumri.

Arif was a commander of Taliban's shadow governor, Mullahinfo-icon Younus, he said.

Brig. Gen. Abdul Rahman Rahimi, the provincial police chief, said Arif had recently entered Pul-i-Khumri for carrying out subversive activities.

Resident Akhtar Mohammad said they heard gunfire at 2pm and saw eight helicopters of the NATOinfo-icon-led force flying over the area.
