Militants urged to shun violence in deference to Eid

Militants urged to shun violence in deference to Eid

Aug 29, 2011 - 14:59

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The High Peace Councilinfo-icon on Monday urged the armed opposition to shun violence and join the reconciliation process in deference to the forthcoming holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

In a press statement, the council once again called on the Talibaninfo-icon and other insurgent groups to halt fighting and reconcile with the government to lead a peaceful life.

"Ordinary Afghans have borne the brunt of the decades of fighting and violence. Now Afghans want peace like other Islamic countries, who address their differences through peaceful dialogue," the statement said.

It called on all parties to the conflict to give up shedding blood of innocent people and listen to the plight of Afghans.

The council also praised the sacrifices of Afghan people as unparallel. The council called on people to extend a helping hand to orphans, widows and the poor during this month of blessing.

The statement requested preachers of mosques throughout the country to promote peace and its values and convey the message of peace to the armed opponents.
