5 Taliban killed in Nuristan, Zabul, Wardak

Sep 07, 2011 - 17:32

QALAT/ JALALABAD (PANinfo-icon): Five Talibaninfo-icon fighters were killed during separate security operations across the country, officials said on Wednesday.

Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, deputy governor for southern Zabul province, told Pajhwok Afghan News US Special Forces conducted an operation in the Omaki area of Qalat City, killing two insurgents.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) and the Taliban have not yet commented on the incident.

However, a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, claimed foreign forces were inflicted heavy casualties in a roadside bombing in the Shahjoy district.

ISAF soldiers were on a patrol in Kala Khail area when a roadside bomb ripped through their vehicle, killing three troops and wounding another two, Ahmadi claimed.

However, his claimed was dismissed by Rasoulyar as baseless.

Separately, a rebel was killed and another wounded in a clash with police in the Pachir Agam area of the Bargi Matal district in eastern Nuristan province on Wednesday, police chief, Brig. Gen. Shams-ur-Rahmand, told Pajhwok Afghan News.  The police did not suffer any causality, he added.

Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said three police were killed and six others wounded in a gun battle with the insurgents in the district. Two fighters were also killed during the engagement, he said.

Elsewhere, ISAF said its forces had killed two Taliban fighters and arrested several others during separate operations in the Nirkh and Syedabad districts of central Maidan Wardak province.

However, local officials said they were unaware of the operations.
