ZARANJ (PANinfo-icon): The security personnel released 10 passengers from militants' captivity after a two-hour encounter in southwestern Nimroz province, officials said on Sunday.

Seeking to seize government officials, the guerrillas stopped passenger vehicles in the Pushta-i-Hasan area of the district and got down 10 civilians, the Khashrod district chief district said.

Muhammad Hashim Noorzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the insurgents wanted to take the captives to Bakwa district when encountered by law-enforcers.

Confirming the incident, the police chief said the security personnel suffered no harm. Rebels' casualties were unknown, Brig Gen Abdul Jabbar Purdali added.

But a local police official said on condition of anonymity the fighters had abducted 10 policemen traveling between Dilaram and Khashrod districts. The policemen were rescued as a result of the operation, the source revealed.

The firefight blocked the highway for two hours, according to Jamil, a bus driver.
