KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): More than 46 tonnes of drugs and chemicals were seized and over 100 suspects detained in a series of police operations last month, officials said on Monday.

The drugs were seized in Kabul, Helmand and several other provinces, said Baz Mohammad Ahmadi, deputy interior minister for counternarcotics affairs.

The drugs, including two tonnes of opium, 1.5 tonnes of heroin, 3.5 tonnes of hashish, 24 tonnes of morphine and 15 tonnes of chemicals, he told a news conference in Kabul.

Ahmadi said 54 weapons were also recovered during 75 operations during the period. Fourteen drug laboratories were also destroyed and 105 traffickers detained.

Certain influential figures were involved in drug trafficking and police could not arrest them without any proof, the deputy minister said, without naming anyone.
