5 policemen, child perish in Kandahar assault

Oct 15, 2011 - 10:20

KANDAHAR CITY (PANinfo-icon): Five border policemen, including a commander, and a child were killed and two civilians injured in a suicide attack in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Saturday.

The incident occurred late on Friday in the Khayasta Pump area of the Spin Boldak border district after a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a police vehicle, Gen. Mohammad Salim Ehsas, the 404th Maiwand Police Zone commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Five border policemen, including Commander Akhtar Mohammad, and a child were killed, he said, adding the police vehicle was also destroyed.

However, a statement from the governor's office contradicted the figures, saying three border police officials and a child were killed and five other people, including three policemen, wounded in the bombing.

Talibaninfo-icon spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack, saying 15 border policemen, including two commanders, were killed and their three vehicles destroyed.
