GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Recent rains have brought a ray of hope to farmers and landowners in southern Ghazni province, which witnessed a prolonged dry spell over the past few years.

Nearly 80 percent of the provincial population relies on agriculture and livestock and the recent rainfall is expected to help boost their produce.

“Overall agricultural produce in Ghazni has fallen by a half and the rains removed fears of continued drought,” Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Director Sultan Hussain Abbasyar told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Khan Mohammad, a resident of Maqur district, said he was unable to feed his sheep due to the dry spell, which led him to sell 10 animals. However, he added the rainfall would make his job easy.

“Last year, wheat production remained very low, but it will increase after the end of the dry spell,” hoped Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Andar district.
