MPs call for probe into 2007 Baghlan deaths

MPs call for probe into 2007 Baghlan deaths

Oct 29, 2011 - 18:53

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Parliamentarians on Saturday renewed their call for an investigation into a 2007 suicide attack that killed a number of their colleagues in northeastern Baghlan province.

Six lawmakers, all members of the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon Finance Commission, their five security guards and 74 other people were killed in the suicide bombing four years ago.

The dead included the commission head, Syed Mustafa Kazimi and members Nazak Amir Sarfaraz, Sahibur Rehman Himmat, Muhammad Arif Zarif and Eng. Abdul Matin.

"No one has so far been arrested in connection with that attack," Wolesi Jirga Speaker Abdur Rauf Ibrahimi told a gathering marking the fourth anniversary of the bombing.

He warned the assassination of Afghan leaders would continue to take place until foreign countries did not stop interfering in the country's internal affairs.

"We remind the enemies of the nation that we will continue following in the footsteps of our martyrs as long as they don't surrender and don't accept the peace process," he said.

Mustafa Kazimi's brother and MP from Kabul, Syed Ali Kazimi, blamed then security officials for failing to take precautionary measures on that fateful day. He said claimed security lapses were fuelling distrust between the government and the people.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Humayun Azizi told Pajhwok Afghan News the departments concerned had investigated a number of incidents, in which leaders and MPs had been killed.

Several suspects had been arrested and punished, he claimed. However, he did not provide details of the punishments.
