KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Nine armed insurgents have been killed, four others injured and seven more captured alive during clashes with police over the past week in southern Kandahar province, an official said on Thursday.
The nine insurgents were killed during face-to-face fighting with police in Kandahar city and some districts, deputy police chief, Col. Rahtmatullah Itrafi, told reporters at a weekly press conference in Kandahar city.
Another four insurgents were injured during the clashes, he said, adding two of the injured had been arrested.
Seven armed men, plotting to carry out terrorist attacks on the eve of Eidul Azha, were arrested with Kalashnikov assault rifles in Kandahar city, the police official said.
He said the dead included five Pakistani militants who had come from Punjab province. They were killed in a clash with a police patrol in the Zheri district, Itrafi said.
He also said new security posts had been established on highways leading to the provincial capital in order to prevent terrorists from entering the city.
