KABUL): The Finance Ministry on Sunday said government employees would be able to receive their salaries through mobile phones over the next three months.

To launch the project, the United States Agency for International Development provided the MTN mobile company $980,000 in assistance, the MTN chief, Hassan Jabir, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the company had acquired the licence for the project from the central bank and that it planned to open 1000 branches offering the service in various parts of the country until the end of the current year.

Jabir added MTN customers having bank accounts would get their salaries after being issued with special codes.

The treasury head at the Ministry of Finance, Haji Mohammad Aqa, said currently 400,000 government servants received salaries through mobile phones.

Another mobile company, Roshan, has initiated a pilot project called “M-paisa” through which 336 policemen are paid salaries through mobile phones.
