KABUL): The creation of a special commission to evolve policies and a mechanism for fighting narcotics was announced in Kabul on Tuesday.
Officials of the ministries of public health) and the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) are members of the commission.
“The body has been set up in accordance with the seventh article of the law on drugs,” the counternarcotics minister said, while addressing a gathering in this regard. “The body is tasked with taking measures to deal with intoxicants and drugs,” Zarar Ahmad Muqbil said.
Coordination to prevent poppy cultivation, discouraging the use of narcotics, providing treatment to drug addicts and setting up sub-committees in provinces were also part of the commission’s tasks, he said.
The counternarcotics ministry says it has the ability to treat one percent of the one million drug addicts in the country.
Officials say the number of drug addicts to be treated is expected to increase to 40 percent in coming years.
