Border policeman, 2 militants killed in clashes

SHABARGHAN/QALAT (PAN): A border police official and two militants were killed in separate gun battles in Jawzjan and Zabul provinces, officials said on Friday.

The policeman and a militant were killed during a clash in Khumab district of Jawzjan on Friday, security chief at the police headquarters, Col. Muhammad Sadiq Muradi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the clash erupted after a group of insurgents launched an attack on a security post in the area.

The dead body of the militant was still lying on the ground at the site of the clash, he said, adding police had recovered a Kalashnikov and two hand grenades from his possession.

It was for the first time that the Taliban had attacked a border force post in the area, said acting district chief Muhammad Ismail.

A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the death of one militant in the incident, saying two policemen were killed and the check was destroyed.

In another report, one militant was killed and another injured during a gun battle with security forces in Shagoi district of Zabul province.

The incident happen on Thursday evening, district chief Muhammad Siddiq, said adding the militant killed in the clash was a Pakistani national. Police seized a Kalashnikov and a wireless from the scene, he said.

Witness Abdul Waris said the militants wanted to attack the district headquarter when they entered a clash with police.
