MEHTARLAM (PAN): Some of the residents of eastern Laghman province lauded role of provincial council while at the same time others criticized it.

Monitoring of developmental projects and advice to provincial administrations are the most important tasks of the council and people are of the opinion the council’s members had done it effectively.

The provincial council has 9 seats, including 3 allocated for women.

They had no objection over the council’s credibility, Muhammad Humayun, resident of Sangra area of Alingar district told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“The council has always tried to help each and every resident of the province and they have not neglected us so far,” he commented.

Giving an example of the council good work, Humayun said money-changers and Central Bank of Afghanistan had a dispute over tax payment in the province, which was settled by members of the provincial council.

Haji Muhammad Ali, a tribal elder from the province said although the members were unable to put pressure on government officials to perform better as they had no power or authority to do so but still the members had not forgotten their obligations.

Some of the locals criticized the council members for not fulfilling promises, they had made to people during their election campaign.

The members had promised locals they would help in construction of roads, schools and bridges etc when they had come to demand votes, but they failed to do so, Abdul Wadud, a shopkeeper and resident of the province complained.

Haji Muhammad Rahim Safi blamed the council for working for their personal interests only and said each of the council’s members had acquired land from municipality.

However, Gulzad Sangarwal, the deputy head of provincial council said they had not used their power to get land from the municipality.

We would do everything we could, to solve problems of people of the province which was their responsibility, he said.

He pointed to a conflict between two tribes of Daulat Shah district of the province which was solved by the efforts of the council.
