HELMAND/MAIDAN WARDAK: Security forces in Helmand and Maidan Wardak provinces handed over dozens of weapons to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) programme on Wednesday.

A statement issued from the Helmand governor’s office said 27 Kalashnikovs, six pistols, three machine guns and explosives were turned in to DIAG representatives.

The Ministry of Defence handed over 11 Kalashnikovs, five sacks of explosives, anti-tanks mines, dozens of rocket and canon shells, a spokesman for the governor of Maidan Wardak said.

Separately, National Directorate of Security (NDS officials seized a huge quantity of expired medicines and food items from clinics and shops in Maidan Wardak.

KABUL: Two insurgents were killed, as many wounded and 28 others detained during joint operations in different provinces over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Wednesday.

The operations were conducted by Afghan and NATO-led troops in Nangarhar, Helmand, Kandahar, Ghazni and Paktia provinces, a statement from the ministry said.

It added 68,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, four AK-47 rifles, one rocket launcher, one machine gun, eight anti-vehicle mines, 13 hand grenades, three pistols, 120 different kinds of weapons, 38 kg of explosives, 84 kg of heroin, 119 kg of opium, 560 kg of hashish and a vehicle were seized.

Additionally, the security personnel recovered eight anti-vehicle mines, 18 packages of explosives, one rocket launcher and 31 shells in Nangarhar, Samangan, Kandahar, Uruzgan and Maidan Wardak provinces.

KABUL: More than 61 unregistered vehicles and motorbikes were confiscated in the capital Kabul and several provinces as part of a campaign to resolve traffic problems, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Wednesday. 

Forty-nine vehicles were impounded in Herat, Ghazni and Nangarhar provinces and 12 motorbikes in Kabul, a statement from the ministry said.

During the ongoing campaign, traffic officials removed black films and tinted glasses from vehicles and investigated driving licences.

On Tuesday, at least 50 cabins and makeshift stalls were destroyed in Kabul and more than 20 stores closed down in northern Balkh province as part of the drive, the ministry said.

KANDAHAR: Three individuals were held 12,500 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, a banned fertiliser used in making homemade bombs, seized in southern Kandahar province, an official said on Wednesday.

During a search operation in Takhta Pul district, police recovered the fertiliser from two tractors, the governor’s spokesman, Zalmay Ayubi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two armed insurgents were detained during a separate police operation in Zherai and 15th police district of Kandahar City, Ayubi said.

He added 31 dynamites, a machine gun, five Kalashnikov, a rocket launcher, two rocket shells and two kilograms of explosives were recovered from the detainees. One of the men was identified as Khairullah, who was allegedly involved in planting mines.

LAGHMAN: Two Taliban militants were killed and six others detained during a clash in the Alingar district of eastern Laghman province on Wednesday, officials said.

The incident happened at around 11 pm, when police and Afghan National Army (ANA) troops were on a joint patrol in the district, an army officer said.

Lt. Col. Sher Zaman Waziri of the 201st Military Crops told Pajhwok Afghan News the detainees were shifted to Kalagosh district.

Separately, one policeman was killed and two others were injured when their vehicle overturned in Alingar district, said the police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdur Rahman Sarjang. He blamed the accident on rash driving.

But deputy public health director, Dr. Mohammad Asif, said they had received one dead and five injured policemen.

NANGARHAR: Police nabbed 20 criminals, including kidnappers and smugglers, in Nangarhar and Helmand provinces on Wednesday, officials said.

Six kidnappers of a Kabul resident were arrested in the 1st police district of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar, Staff Capt. Hazrat Muhammad Zmaray told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The victim, Safiullah from Kabul, managed to escape from captivity, while police looked for the kidnappers, he said.

Separately, 31 rockets, as many dynamites, 350 machine gun shells, eight hand grenades and explosives were recovered from a militant hideout in Kot district of the province. 

Another three men, who wanted to smuggle 60 pieces of timber, were arrested in Achin district of the province, a statement from the Nangarhar police headquarters said.

Afghan and foreign forces detained 11 poppy farmers in Greshk district of southern Helmand province.
