BALKH: A militant commander was killed during an operation by Afghan and international troops in the northern province of Balkh on Thursday, the alliance said.

The Taliban said in a statement.

“The leader was found armed and displaying hostile intent. The security force responded to the immediate threat, engaged and killed the insurgent,” the statement added.

It accused the commander of financially and logistically supporting insurgents in Nahrain district and planting roadside bombs targeting security personnel.

The operation was carried out in the Karta-i-Aryana area of the city, the 303rd police zone spokesman, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, said.

DAIKUNDI: Unidentified gunmen torched a village mosque that also served as school in the central province of Daikundi, officials said on Thursday.

A suspect had bwww.pajhwok.comction with thwww.pajhwok.compajhwok.com district, the district chief Murtaza Alimizada said.

As many as 200 books, 15 carpets, 150 copies of the Holy Quran and other necessary items had burnt during the Wednesday night fire, he added.

The assailants could not be identified as yet, but the detained suspect was being interrogated, he added.

Mohammad Ali, a resident of Marblagh village, where the incident occurred, said it was possible that the fire might be a result of carelessness by the students.

HELMAND: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a tribal elder, who served on the local council for Sangin district, in the southern pwww.pajhwok.comn official said on Thursday.

Hajji Fazal Mohammad Ishaqzai was gunned down on Wednesday when he was returning home from evening prayers, the governor’s spokesman said.

Daud Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News the attackers had managed to escape, but police had launched a hunt for them.

It was the third member of local councils killed by militants over the past two weeks in the province.

The Taliban have pressing a sweeping assassination campaign that has killed hundreds of local political figures in recent years. The insurgents are seeking to weaken confidence and discourage people from joining the government.

JAWZJAN: A plot to poison local police was prevented in the Qush Tapa district of northern Jawzjan province, officials said on Thursday.

Nearly a hundred kilograms of poisonous substance was found at the Traghali Afghania check post manned by 15 local policemen, police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the cook, who had fled to avoid arrest, was linked to militants who wanted to poison the policemen with his help. The plot was foiled based on an intelligence report, Ghairat said

The administrative head of Qush Tapa, Aminullah, confirmed the conspiracy had been prevented, saying a search to arrest the cook was ongoing.

He said the post was manned by 15 local policemen.

KABUL: Police rescued a trader from being kidnapped after a half an hour gun-battle with the kidnappers in central Kabul province, an official said on Thursday.

The trader, identified as Sawdagar was on his home when unknown gunmen seized him at around 9:30am in the Kart-i-Naw area of Kabul, crime branch chief, Col. Mohammad Zahir, told a news conference.

The kidnappers wanted to shift the trader to an unknown area, but police foiled their bid and rescued the man after a brief clash. Two of the kidnappers were arrested and their other fellows managed to escape, the official said.

Sawdagar, a resident of southeastern Paktia province, thanked police for saving him being kidnapped. He said he had no enmity with anyone.

KABUL: Two armed insurgents were killed and nine others arrested during a series of joint operations in several provinces over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the spy service said on Thursday.

Two weapon and ammunition depots were seized during the operations conducted by Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops in Laghman, Jawzjan, Uruzgan and Herat provinces, MoI said in a statement. It said two militants were killed and five others were detained during the operations.

Five Kalashnikovs, a pistol, three different weapons, ten hand grenades and mines, two-hundred kilograms ammonium nitrates, seventy kilograms explosives, two walkie-talkies and five vehicles and motorbikes belonging to insurgents were seized.

In southern Kandahar, four suspects were detained for having links with insurgents, the National Directorate of Security said in a statement.

It identified the detainees as Daud Shah, Namatullah, Abdul Samad and Fazal Mohammad, all residents of Kandahar province.

Four Kalashnikovs, 10 kilograms of explosives, three remote-controlled bombs and dozens of different kinds of bullets were recovered from the detainees.  

In central Maidan Wardak, an arm depot containing four rocket shells, three anti-personal mines, six mortar shells, one artillery shell, a walkie-talkie was found, the statement said.  

Another arm deport containing 28 artillery shells, three hand grenades, one mine and hundreds of machinegun bullets were seized close to the Herat-Torghondi highway, the spy service said.

MAIDAN WARDAK: The Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have replaced private security guards to keep security for towers of two private telecommunication companies in the central province of Maidan Wardak.

The replacement comes after the Taliban recently blew up a tower of the Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) in Langar area of Chack district. The firm then requested ANA soldiers to maintain security for its towers in the province, an MTN employee said on condition of anonymity.

The commander for the 4th brigade of the 201st Selab military corps, Brig. Gen. Abdul Raziq, confirmed the Afghan soldiers had taken security responsibility for towers belonging to Roshan and MTN mobile companies in the province.

He said their aim was to protect property of the people and if people had any complaint, they were ready to leave the locations

A resident of the area, Mohammad Sharif, said the soldier had good behavior and people were happy with them. He said the ANA troops did not harass residents.
