Wolesi Jirga asked to disqualify Minister of Agriculture

FAIZABAD (PAN, Irrigation and Livestock must be disqualified by the parliament as he had not paid attention to provide food stuff to drought affected families of the province.

The Ministry had not sent quota of the affected families of the province for the last one year, despite repeated requests by the council and local government departments, Zabihullah Atiq, head of the council told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Snow had destroyed most of crops in various districts last year while they had a low production in current year too, he said, adding they had asked the Ministry to provide food to provincial capital Faiz Abad city, at that time when roads were open for transportation.

“Now nine link roads to those affected districts are closed due to snowfall while if food and other stuff are not provided to these people within 20 days many of them will leave their areas and they will lose most of their animals too,” he said.

He demanded of Wolesi Jirga, it should disqualify him because he failed to pay attention to problems of the people.

Eng. Muhammad Alam Alimi, provincial director of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock department confirmed those problems and said 50 percent of corps were destroyed by drought current year and people were facing shortage of food and animal forage.

“We have started distribution of three metric tonne of food which includes food, wheat, rice, animal feeds and some other items,” he said. 

Ghulam Hassan Haidari, head of animal health department in the province said, “We have some stock of animal feed but as road are closed, we are unable to transfer it. There are two ways of transportation, one from Tajikistan and the second is by air.”

Abdul Hameed, resident of Raghistan district said they were facing shortage of food and animal feeds for the last two years, but the government had not provided aid to them.

“If we did not get aid, both animals and humans will die,” he said.

Shah Waliullah Adib, the governor said they had discussed the issue with the Ministry several times. “The Ministry did not take any action when the weather was suitable for transfer of foods and other goods to affected areas of the province but as the roads are closed now, only two options of transportation via Tajikistan or air are there,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Majeed Qarar, spokesman of the Ministry said distribution of 2000 metric tonnes of food stuff was underway while he had no information about the places of distribution of those items.
