Afghan forces take Maidan Shahr control

MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN): The security responsibility for Maidan Shahr, the capital of central Maidan Wardak province, was on Wednesday formally transferred to Afghan forces control during a special ceremony, an official said.

The ceremony was attended by the Security Transition Commission chairman, Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, Governor Mohammad Haleem Fadaee, deputy interior minister, Abdur Rahman Rahman, IDLOG deputy director Abdul Malik Siddiqui and deputy education minister (Islamic affairs), Shafiq Samim.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) commander in Maidan Wardak, Muzafar and provincial council members and tribal elders were also in attendance.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Haleem Fidaye said the noose was tightened around militants who were forced into fleeing the province, thanks to Afghan security forces.

He called the security transition a national process, which would help Afghans take over responsibility of security for reconstruction projects.

Ahmadazai said the second phase of the transition was a national target which had been achieved.  He said it was in the national interest to see the transition completed by the end of 2014.

He thanked foreign troops, especially US, for their active role in providing security for the province.
