Kandahar security has improved: Weesa

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): The security situation in southern Kandahar province is improved ahead of transition to Afghan forces next summer, the governor said on Wednesday.

Toryalai Weesa said after a meeting with the UN deputy representative for Afghanistan, would be recaptured soon.

One example of improved security was the retaking of Mianshin district from insurgents, he said, adding a large number of officials were appointed in different districts to ensure good governance.

“To be ready for the security handover, we are working on a comprehensive plan,” he said, complaining the central government had failed over the past three years to provide development funds for several provincial departments.

Weesa asked donors to coordinate the implementation of reconstruction projects with local government officials. “The local government better knows its needs than the central authority.”

Michael Keating promised to share the governor’s demands with donors. He hoped sharing of views with donors would have good impact on local governance.
