KABUL, or lower house.

Lawmakers, Haji Zahir Qadir and Nadar Khan Katawazai are in run for the first vice-chairman of the parliamentary board, while Ahmad Behzad, Dr. Jafar Mihdavi and Mohammad Abdah are eyeing the position of second vice-chairman.

Public representative from Parwan, Abdul Sattar Khawasi and Zaheer Sadat from Panjsher have nominated themselves for secretary. Qais Hassan from Kabul and Mehar Farhad Azimi are running for deputy secretary.

The voting process that started at 11am is still ongoing. President Hamid Karzai on Saturday opened the 16th term of Parliament, which has entered its second year.

Under Article 87 of the Constitution, both houses of Parliament elect from amongst their members a chairman of the administrative board, with first and second deputy speakers and two lawmakers as the board’s secretary and deputy for a year.
