ISLAMABAD (PAN‘s political office in Qatar, as proposed by the United States

“Peace and stability in Afghanistan is indeed in our own larger national interest and Pakistan will continue doing whatever it can to facilitate the process of reconciliation in that country,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.

At a weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Abdul Basit refused to answer questions regarding Pakistan’s role in the creation of Taliban’s bureau in Doha for negotiations with the international fraternity.

For the sake of peace and security in Afghanistan, the spokesman said Pakistan had been pursuing all tracks, including bilateral, trilateral and multi-lateral negotiations and engagements. “All these tracks are supplementing each other.”

In response to a query, Basit said Islamabad desired the return of Afghan refugees to their homeland with dignity. “We have asked the international community, especially the UNHCR, to prepare an effective programme for their repatriation.”

With regard Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar’s planned visit to Kabul, Basit said dates were yet to be firmed up. She is visiting the Afghan capital in response to an invitation from the government of President Hamid Karzai.

Asked about the 31 Pakistanis detained in Bagram, the spokesman said Pakistan’s Embassy in Kabul was in touch with the Afghan government for the early release of the detainees.
