IMU leader killed, Haqqani network militant capture

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): An Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) leader was killed during an Afghan-led and coalition-supported operation in Taloqan, the capital of northern Takhar province, on Sunday.

The dead militant, named Ilham, was blamed for the Dec. 25 suicide bomb attack that killed a senior Afghan official, and facilitating the training of suicide bombers, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) said.

A statement from the alliance said Ilham and one other armed insurgent engaged the security force with fragmentation grenades during the operation. The security force returned fire, killing both.

Also on Sunday, a Talibaninfo-icon leader was captured during an operation in the Nahr-i-Saraj district of southern Helmand province. The leader operated in Yak Chal village, where he distributed ammunition and explosives to insurgents.

In central Afghanistaninfo-icon, a Haqqani Networkinfo-icon facilitator was detained during an operation in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar province. The facilitator produced explosives and emplaced roadside bombs throughout the region.
