KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A Tribal militiaman killed his wife for giving birth to a baby girl in the northern province of Kunduz , officials said on Monday.

Sher Mohammad, 30, strangled his 22 years old spouse, Storai, with the help of his mother in the Mafli village of Khanabad district on Saturday night.

Police spokesman, Syed Masrur Hussaini, told Pajhwok Afghan News Storai was strangulated for bearing three daughters in four years, he said.

The mother-in-law of the victim had been detained while her son managed to flee, the police officer added. Efforts are on to track down the killer.

District police chief, Col. Sufi Habibullah, said the militiaman had sought refuge from a local strongman named Qadir, who leads 30 illegal armed men. He added they could not detain the man as long as he was protected by the commander.

Sher Mohammad had warned his wife several times with harsh consequences if she did not give birth to a son, Director of Women’s Affairs Nadira Gayah said, while denouncing the incident.

Meanwhile, religious scholar Maulvi Khosh Mohammad also condemned the murder, saying the incident was reflective of ignorance among the people.

“It’s the worst form of crime and is completely against the women’s rights, guaranteed by Islam,” he said, seeking deterrent punishment for the man.
