QALA-I-NAW (PAN): Security for the provincial capital Qala-i-Naw city and one district in western Badghis was handed over on Tuesday to Afghans forces as a part of the second phase of transition, officials said.

Security Transition Commission Chairman Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, representatives of the Ministries of Defence and Interior, the 207the Zafar Military Corps commander, Governor Dilbar Arman and tribal elders participated in the handover ceremony.

Afghan National Police (ANP), with support from residents, could provide security for the entire province, the governor said. The police force had improved a great deal as a result of training and equipment, he added.

Unemployment, illiteracy, lack of link roads between districts and the appointment of provincial officials by the central government were the main problems facing the province, the governor continued.

Urging people to cooperate with the government in maintaining security, Ashraf Ghani said the ministry concerned would further train and equip police in the near future.

Takhar, Balkh, Daikundi, Samangan, Kabul and Nimroz provinces and Jalalabad, Chaghcharan, Shiberghan, Faizabad, Ghazni, Maidan Shahr and Qala-i-Naw cities are included in the second phase of the security switch.

Faizabad, Shahr-i-Buzurg, Yaftal Sofla, Arghanchkhwa, Baharak, Tishkan, Kishm and Argu districts in Badakhshan are also due to change hands.
