Karzai urged to introduce qualified Cabinet picks

KABUL pressure in introducing qualified and incorrupt candidates as his Cabinet picks to Parliament for a vote of confidence.

Karzai last month said he had finalised a list of his ministers-designate for a vote of confidence from the lower house to replace the acting ministers. Several ministries are currently headed by acting ministers.

In a statement, the AACN also requested parliamentarians to vote only for incorrupt and qualified candidates.

Under article 75 of the constitution, the government is responsible to maintain public law and order and eliminate every kind of administrative corruption and under article 74 ministers should take the oath to respect the constitution and other laws of Afghanistan, safeguard the rights of citizens and serve with loyalty before assuming office.

“But against the oath some of Cabinet members violate the laws and involve in corruption. The high level of corruption in the country has resulted into insecurity, instability, barriers to developments, and gap between people, government and international community,” the statement said.

“The existence of acting cabinet members beyond the period which has been mentioned in the laws, are big obstacle to transparency, accountability, fighting corruption and rule of law.”

Meanwhile, the AACN strongly supported the latest actions by the High Office of Oversight and Anti-corruption (HOOAC) regarding sending cases of some graft-tainted cabinet members to the Attorney General Office. The AACN appealed to the authorities to respect the laws and seriously follow the cases of corrupt officials and individuals.
