Military prosecutor accused of moral corruption, links to Taliban

Some high-level officials, wishing anonymity, alleged Noor Mohammad Bala Karzai, the Paktia military prosecutor, was involved in sexual abuse of youth and children.

They blamed the official for keeping three teen-aged boys, as well as for his loyalty to the insurgents. The military prosecutor convinced policemen into joining the Taliban, they claimed. 

Najibullah, a resident of Gardez, told Pajhwok Afghan News the prosecutor had forced his brother into abandoning his police job.

“My brother, Fida Jan, was the commander of a police checkpoint in Zurmat district, but he was forced to quit the job,” he said, adding his brother had gone missing after leaving the job.

In a telephone conversation from an unknown place, Jan accused the prosecutor of having links with the Taliban and encouraging security personnel to swell insurgent ranks.

An official at the police headquarters said Bala Karzai had kept three boys for sexual intercourse. “According to the law, people below the age of 18 cannot be recruited into police. But the nonage boys are working with him as driver and bodyguards.”

Over the telephone, the prosecutor said he had no idea why such allegations were being leveled against him. He insisted there was no truth in the accusations.

Shafiqullah, acting human rights commission director for the southeast, said so far they had received no complaints against Bala Karzai. The commission would issue an appeal for his trial if the allegations were substantiated.
