KABUL by US troops at the Bagram military base in central Parwan province, on Tuesday ordered a delegation of religious scholars to probe the incident.
Headed by Maulvi Council, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
Initial reports said US troops at the Bagram airfield had burnt four copies of the holy book, sparking angry protests by residents in Kabul and the central province.
The statement said the delegation had been asked to submit its report to the president after completing its investigation.
Meanwhile, ISAF Commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John R. Allen, ordering an investigation into the reported sacrilege, offered his sincere apologies to the President, government and people of Afghanistan.
“When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate religious authorities.”
