Rains to continue until April: Met office

KABUL Meteorological Service on Tuesday said there would be abundant water for irrigation purposes next year as the rainy season would last until April, but an astrologist said there will be rains only between February 26 and March 19.

Muhammad Ishaq Noori, the metrological service head, told Pajhwok Afghan News precipitation had reached its normal scale, and there will be more rains in coming days.

He added Afghanistan received 240 millimeters rains annually, but the rainfall decreased by 20 percent last year. He predicted more rains this year, saying the precipitation could reach more than 240mm, which would help overcome the ongoing drought spell sweeping through northern provinces.

However, Abdullah Kandahari, a renowned astrologist, predicted it will be raining from February 26 until March 19 and at least for another six days.

“God knows the unseen, but I cannot predict rainfall after March 5,” he said, but added the dry spell would overcome to a great extent.

In 14 northern, northeastern and northwestern provinces, farmers complain about the scarcity of irrigation waters due to less rainfall last year.

Ishaq said warm winds have started blowing in most parts of the country and the cold spell was ongoing in some western provinces. He said the warm winds would soon extend to western provinces.

“It will be very cold until February 7, so I inform all Afghans to protect themselves and their cattle from the danger of the cold wave,” he said
