Indian appointed as Afghan batting coach

KABUL Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed an Indian as batting coach for the national team ahead of the 2012 international Twenty20 cricket tournament.

Umesh Patwal, director at the Global Cricket School in Mumbai, had been appointed on a temporary basis, ACB Chief Executive Nasimullah Danish told Pajhwok Afghan News on Sunday.

He called Patwal a talented and experienced coach, who would help the side improve its batting department before the T-20 event in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Danish said if Patwal’s efforts helped the Afghan team performs well in the UAE event, scheduled to begin two weeks later, he could be considered for a permanent job.

He acknowledged the Afghans trained at Patwal’s cricket school in Mumbai had been efficient members of the national squad.

Bashir Stanikzai, development manager at the ACB, said Patwal had previously trained Afghans in the batting department and his contributions had been commendable.
