KABUL): The commander of the International Security Assistance Force on Monday joined President Karzai in condemning a suicide car bomb attack in eastern Nangarhar province.

At least 9 Afghans, including civilians, security guards and an Afghan soldier, were killed in the assault on the airport in Jalalabad, the provincial capital.

Gen. John R. Allen said in a statement: “On behalf of the entire ISAF coalition, I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the victims in today’s attack.”

He condemned the Taliban for murdering innocent civilians and Afghan National Security Force members, and poisoning the sacred faith of Islam.

Insurgents tried to attack an ISAF installation, and in that objective, they failed, he added. “The Taliban took more innocent lives and devastated families who will forever mourn the loss of their loved ones.”

Allen noted that continued violence only hindered the desire to reach a political settlement.  “We are steadfast in our desire to support our Afghan partners, and will use the extensive range of our resources to eradicate this heartless insurgency.”
