Pakistan committed to regional peace: Gilani

Pakistan committed to regional peace: Gilani

Mar 02, 2012 - 12:51

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon):  The Pakistani prime minister says he has appealed to insurgents to join the reconciliation process initiated by the Afghan government in response to President Hamid Karzai’s request for help.

“I appealed to all factions of Talibaninfo-icon to support the president in his endeavours to bring about peace through reconciliation in Afghanistaninfo-icon,” Yusuf Raza Gilani was quoted as saying in a statement from the Pakistaninfo-icon embassy in Kabul

At a meeting with UK’s Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell, Gilani said his country remained committed to peace in the region. He sought help from the British government for the development of the tribal region near the Afghanistan border.

The region’s healthinfo-icon and educationinfo-icon infrastructure had been destroyed by terrorists, the prime minister said, hoping the tribal belt’s development would help overcome the scourge of extremism.

Praising Gilani’s bold initiative to support the Afghan peace process, Mitchell said the British government was looking forward to the premier’s visit to the UK in May.
