KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Security officials on Wednesday said that a fresh military offensive against militants would be launched in four southern provinces in a fortnight.

Codenamed “Operation Naveed”, the offensive will be conducted in Zabul, Kandahar, Helmand and Uruzgan provinces, the 205th Atal Military Corps commander said.

Gen. Abdul Hamid Hamid told a special gathering of Afghan and NATO to the provinces.

International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers would play a supportive role in the Afghan army-led operation, which would also focus on clearing highways of landmines, he added.

Afghan police and intelligence operatives would also take part in the operation, 404th Maiwand Police Zone Commander Gen. Mohammad Salim Ihsas said. All highways were currently controlled by police, he said.

“Wherever an offensive is conducted, residents will be provided with health and reconstruction services,” promised Kandahar’s Deputy Governor Abdul Qayum Patyal.

Uruzgan Deputy Governor Khudai Rahim said that they would implement 207 reconstruction projects in several parts of the province. Security in most areas had improved recently, he claimed.
