KABUL is rattled by atrocities carried out by foreign troops on civilians, German Chancellor Angela Merkel flew quietly to Mazar-i-Sharif in an unannounced trip on Monday.

She is expected to meet German troops and local officials in the northern province of Balkh.

But Merkel’s scheduled trip to northern Kunduz province was cancelled due to heavy snowfall and bad weather.

Nearly 4,800 German troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan’s northern provinces.

Nearly 53 German soldiers, part of the NATO coalition force, had been killed during the decade-old anti-terrorism war in Afghanistan.

German’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel on Sunday signed a $312 million aid pact with Afghanistan.
