Afghan math genius in the making

HERAT CITY (PAN): A young mathematician, son of a farmer, who discovered formulas and authored books on mathematical sciences is yet to hit fame, but instead languishing in painful poverty.

Seventeen-year- old Safiullah Bahrami, of Sultan Ghyasuddin Ghori High, has discovered 13 math formulas in squares, cubes, multiplication and even went on to author three mathematics-related manuscripts.

But none is yet to hit the bookstores, simply because he has not been recognised as a budding scholar.

“Currently I teach English and mathematics at a private institute and I receive little money from which I purchase books, notebooks and pens,” said Bahrami, who hails from western Herat.

The 10^th– grader, talented and creative, lost his father when he was only three years old and currently ekes out a living with his mother, who struggles as a housemaid and survives on paltry income. 

“My mother washes people’s clothes and clean houses to earn a living, and persuades me to continue my education,” he added.

But, economic hardship and even Afghanistan-class mathematician one day.

The regular first-grader lives in a poorly furnished musty room in 8^th police district, provided by a kind relative, but not even comfortable to house his computer — another special gift.

“My son discovered several mathematical formulas and written some mathematical books.  Every night he sits in the corner of the room studying his schools subjects and recites the Holy Quran.

“I am very happy that God gave me such a son,” prides the mother, Hanifa, aged 35, who suffers ill health, like rheumatism, but determined to groom her son as a successful mathematician.

Bahrami had also written a book titled “Hopes to Success” that was  acknowledged by the provincial Science Centre and two other books in trigonometry and geometry, mainly for preparing students sitting for  university entrance exam, but yet to be confirmed by the centre.   

Khwaja Hafizullah Heravi, his school principal described Bahrami as a creative talented student, committed to religious beliefs and a person who doesn’t hesitate to share his knowledge with his fellow students. 

He said: “The elite student has gotten top scores over the past four years since he enrolled at this school and he teaches 10th and 11th grade students mathematic subjects when teachers are absent.”

Heravi added Bahrami was also able to teach English and some computer’s programs and memorised parts of the Holy Quran.

He said Bahrami’s mother should be honored as an exemplary woman who sacrificed so much to educate her son despite their economic hardship.  

Meanwhile, in appreciation, Governor Daud Shah Sabah had offered Bahrami a residential flat in one of the towns in Herat City.

It is a long arduous task for a young student like Bahrami to achieve his ambition in a country like Afghanistan, but he had certainly proved his mettle to be mathematician genius.
