Avalanches kill 22 in Badakhshan

FAIZABAD (PANinfo-icon): Twenty-two people, including womeninfo-icon and children, were killed by snow avalanches in Afghanistaninfo-icon's remote northeastern Badakhashan province, officials said on Tuesday.

According to initial reports, 21 people died in the Irak village of Wakhan district on Wednesday night, provincial head of the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), Sanaullah Amiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Massive relief operations are underway in the avalanche-hit areas, the district chief, Syed Fairoz, said, while confirming the civilian deaths.

In another incident, a shepherd was killed and nearly 100 of his livestock perished on Wednesday, when they were buried under snow avalanches in Sohadai district, said the administrative head of the town, Abdul Maroof Khairkhwa.
