14 bodies buried under Badakhshan avalanche retrieved

FAIZABAD (PAN): The bodies of 14 people buried under a massive snow avalanche were recovered while six others are still missing in northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Saturday.

The avalanche happened in a remote village of Nasi district on Friday, burying at least 20 people and five houses, an Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) official told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Sanaullah Amiri said so far 14 bodies had been retrieved from the snow-bound area by residents. Efforts are underway to rescue the people trapped under the snow. The secen is eight hours walk from the district centre.

Amiri said rescuers were yet to be sent to the village and the death toll might increase. Humanitarian assistance, including food and cash, has been dispatched to the area to help the victims.
