FAIZABAD (PAN): A suicide bomber on foot blew himself up in the remote northeastern province of Badakhshan on Thursday, killing two civilians, officials said.

At least two people were killed and 17 others wounded in the explosion that rocked the main bazaar of Kisham district at about 2pm.

Deputy police chief Col. Sakhi Dad Haideri believed security personnel were among the casualties. He had no idea who was the target of the attack.

Faizur Rahman Ahmadi, a doctor at the district hospital, confirmed receiving two bodies and 17 injured people. Two of the critically wounded people were referred to Takhar Civil Hospital. All the victims were civilians, he added.

The blast happened close to a girls’ school in the district centre, according to Abdul Jabbar Karimi, the town’s police chief. He verified the casualties, saying the bomber’s motive was yet to be known.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but officials often blame the enemies of the country — a euphemism for Taliban — for such attacks.
