TIRINKOT (PAN): Hundreds of families were displaced overnight after three days of non-stop rains triggered flash flooding on the outskirts of Tirinkot, the provincial capital of central Uruzgan province, officials said on Friday.
Nearly 300 families were evacuated to high ground after floods hit the Shah Mansoor village late on Thursday night, the governor’s spokesman, Syed Mustafa Kazimi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Police and a rescue team had reached the site to shift affected families to safer places, he said.
The families also suffered financial losses as their houses were washed away in the disaster, he said. The Provincial Reconstruction) and other donor agencies had been asked for assistance, but there was no response as yet, he claimed.
Villagers, who lost houses to the floods, asked the government to help them rebuild homes.
Ezatullah, one of the affected residents, said nearly 250 houses were destroyed after flood waters inundated rooms.
He said it was government’s responsibility to rescue people in trouble, adding the displaced families were in dire need of urgent assistance.
