KABUL): Plans are in the pipeline to construct a state-of-the-art convention centre capable of hosting national-level gatherings in the capital Kabul.

The mega centre to be financed by China would play host to large-scale national conferences and Jirgas or grand assemblies, an official said on Tuesday.

A Presidential Palace’s statement in Kabul said an accord was signed between Abdul Karim Khuram, the president’s office head and Xu Feihong, Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan.

Funded by the Chinese National Bank, the centre could accommodate more than 3,000 people at a time, said the statement.

However, the statement gave no further details on the cost, location of the building and when construction works would begin.

China had also constructed a multi-storey building for the state-run Jamhoriat Hospital — costing $25 million.

The 350-bed hospital is equipped with latest technology medical facilities, including ultrasound, CT scan, blood filtration equipments, x-ray machines, oxygen and encephalography (EEG).
