KABUL had closed some schools in southern Ghazni province.
Several school staffers, students and residents said about 20 schools in Ghazni had been shut over the past two weeks due to Taliban’s stern warnings, but education officials denied the claim.
Karzai lamented in his bi-weekly speech on Friday that thousands of boy and girl students had been prevented from going to school as a result of Taliban’s threats.
He questioned the militants who were actually affected by their actions, explaining that the US and other foreign countries in no way suffered due to the move; instead Afghan children were deprived of education.
“Due to illiteracy, we face lack of doctors in the country and our patients travel abroad for routine medical treatment. We have no engineers to construct roads and buildings for us,” he added.
The insurgents did not want the country to be self-sufficient and free from relying on outsiiders, he said. Karzai urged militant leaders to stop shutting schools and allow Afghan children receive proper education.
