KABUL) on Sunday recognised graduates of a five-month on-the-job certificate programme at the Ministry of Energy and Water.

In a statement, the agency said the training programme was aimed at developing and strengthening technical and managerial capacity of the ministry’s design and construction team.

USAID Afghanistan Mission Director Ken Yamashita and Energy and Water Minister Mohammad Ismail Khan attended the event.

Yamashita, stressing the importance of on-the-job training courses, said that “improved water infrastructure, governance, and management of existing and new services were essential initiatives.

“Enhancing the technical capacity of Ministry of Energy and Water staff working on water infrastructure is a positive step in that direction,” the statement quoted him as saying.

Ismail Khan appreciated USAID’s capacity building programme at his ministry, saying enhancing the capacity of staff was a big investment to the ministry and Afghanistan.

The statement said Afghanistan was not considered a ‘water-scarce’ country since its total renewable water resources were well above levels established for water-stressed or water-scarce countries.

Nevertheless, careful management of Afghanistan’s water infrastructure and services would result in a more efficient and cost-effective provision of water, it said.
