KABUL): The Defense Ministry raised concerns over the country’s air force capabilities, saying that 15 transportation airplanes given by the United States were obsolete and could not be used, the president office said in a statement.
Chaired by President Hamid Karzai, the country’s air force status was discussed at the national security council meeting at the presidential palace on Sunday, the statement said.
A ministry’s report presented at the meeting said 15 (C27) transportation planes provided by the US were obsolete, lacked parts and were not functioning. The company that produced the planes had also ceased production.
Besides, the report also mentioned that the ministry was unable to provide immediate help to flood-affected people on time because some helicopters were under repair.
The ministry asked the president and national security council to negotiate with US and NATO to improve the country’s air force.
“The improvement of the country’s air force was so slow, these calls for the United States to intensify efforts to improve the air force capabilities,” added the statement.
The ministry said the training of the air force pilots was very slow as well and asked urgent measure to be taken to address the issue.
