KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): At least 21 civilians were killed and 50 others wounded in two back-to-back suicide attacks in a bazaar on the Kandahar-Spin Boldak highway in the southern province on Wednesday, officials said.

The first attack took place at around 11 am when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden motorcycle in the bazaar near the Kandahar International Airport, the governor’s spokesman Javed Faisal told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Another suicide bomber exploded his bomb-rigged moterbike in the bazaar near Afghan National Army (ANA) headquarters, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Razaq, said. The assailant struck when the people gathered to take the victims to hospital.

“The agents of Punjab (a euphemism for Taliban) have once again spilled the blood of innocent civilians,” he said while responding the query who were behind the consecutive bombings, one the bloodiest attacks in recent weeks.

A shopkeeper in the aera, Mohammad Ismail, said they were busy collecting the dead bodies and taking the injured to hosptial when the second explosion happened.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, caimed responsibility for the twin assaults. Dozens of Afghan and foreign sodliers were killed in the bombing near the Kandahar airport, he claimed.
