130 rescued after floods hit Takhar’s village

KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): A senior official said on Thursday 130 people were rescued and evacuated to safer places after three days of flooding in the Ishkamish district of northern Takhar province.

Dozens of houses, hundreds of acres of farmland and roads were destroyed in the natural disaster that severely hit the Sherdara village, where all roads linking it to the district centre had been closed, Governor Faiz Mohammad Tawhidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Of the 250 people marooned in high floodwaters, 130 persons, including elderly men, children and women, were rescued and evacuated by Afghan National Army (ANA) helicopters to the district centre, he said. However, he added the lives of the remaining 120 persons were at risk.

The governor said the affected families were supplied food items, but they needed potable water because floodwaters had contaminated wells. The governor feared a possible outbreak of water-borne diseases.

Provincial Natural Disasters Management Authority head Abdur Razaq Zinda said the affected families distributed oil, flour and rice after they were evacuated to the district centre.

He also said the 120 people stranded in Sherdara village had been delivered food items and shelter. He asked their main office in Kabul and donor organizations for assistance in dealing with the situation.
