Kunar forest set ablaze by Pakistani missiles

Kunar forest set ablaze by Pakistani missiles

Jun 30, 2012 - 11:59

ASADABAD (PANinfo-icon): Officials on Saturday said forest in the eastern Kunar province caught fire due to missiles fired by Pakistani forces on the Narai district.

Since morning until 8 pm on Friday, Pakistani troops fired 61 missiles on Tabash area of the district, setting ablaze the conifer forest, the district chief Gul Zaman told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Neither there is sophisticated firefighting equipment in the province nor people could go to the area due to the continuous cross-border attacks by Pakistani soldiers, he added.

He urged the central government and foreign agencies to help them in controlling the fire from spreading to other areas.

While confirming the fire was caused by missile attacks, a Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon public representative from Kunar, Haji Sakhi Mushwani, said if the government and international community did not prevent these attacks, people along the bordering areas would face severe crisis.

The attacks on the bordering areas of Kunar increased, after Pakistani Talibaninfo-icon attacked their army killing 17 soldiers.

Pakistani officials claimed that militants crossed Afghan border and attack their soldiers --- a claim refuted by Afghan officials.
