US concerned at rising green-on-blue attacks

KABUL, where several American soldiers were wounded in the latest incident on July 3.

An Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier opened fire on US troops, wounding five of them in the central province of Maidan Wardak. It was the 19^th insider attack so far during the current year.

The shooting took place on Tuesday evening when the ANA soldier entered an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) base in the Hasankhel area of Syedabad district.

Wali Mohammad, the assailant who hails from northern Kunduz province, managed to flee after injuring the American soldiers.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the attacker, who is still at large, was apparently an Afghan soldier. The wounded servicemembers were in stable condition at a military hospital, he added.

Twenty-six coalition soldiers, including 13 Americans, have been killed in such attacks so far, according to the spokesman, who expressed deep concern at the rising green-on-blue assaults.

He told a questioner the Pentagon was preparing to release about id=”mce_marker”.1 billion withheld from Pakistan supply routes into Afghanistan.

The withheld dollars are part of the US Coalition Support Fund to reimburse Pakistan for supporting US counterinsurgency operations, Kirby said.

“Several trucks have gone through and this will continue. The traffic is starting to flow,” he said, hours after Pakistan reopened the supply line.
