KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the open-ended Richter scale shook buildings in the central capital Kabul on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake struck the northern Hindu Kushinfo-icon region, according to a preliminary report from the US Geological Survey. The tremor was also felt in neighbouring Pakistaninfo-icon and India.

The epicenter of the quake lay some 72 kilometres southeast of Faizabad, the capital of northern Badakhshan province, and 121 kilometres northwest of Pakistan’s northwestern Chitral valley.

Northern Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistan are frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush, which lies near the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
