KABUL’s affairs director of eastern Laghman province.

On Friday, a remote-controlled IED detonated inside Hanifa’s vehicle in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital, killing her and injuring her husband, daughter and six other civilians.

Since her appointment in 2008, Hanifa worked tirelessly to promote and protect women’s rights, a statement from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said.

“The United Nations is gravely concerned about ongoing targeted killings of civilians,” said Ján Kubiš, the Special Representative of the UN secretary-general.

“The deliberate killing of a brave woman and a public servant dedicated to improving the situation of Afghan women and working for the safety and security of her country is an outrage. Those who perpetrated this egregious crime must be brought to justice.”

The United Nations extended its condolences to those injured, including Ms. Hanifa’s family members, and wished her husband and daughter a speedy recovery.
