KABUL.

A prominent member of parliament and several top officials were among 19 people killed in the attack in Aibak, the provincial capital.
MP Ahmad Khan Samangani, western zone police commander Syed Ahmad Sami and some top-ranking officials were killed in the attack on the lawmaker daughter’s marriage party.

“We extend our condolences to the families of Samangani and Khan and to the families of all victims of today’s attack.  This attack will only harden our resolve to work together with the Afghan government and people to realize a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan,” said the US the embassy in Kabul.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) joined the chorus in condemning the brazen assault.

“Such indiscriminate targeting of civilians by anti-government forces, such inhumane brutality that is against the teachings of Islam and against international law should stop immediately. Let us be clear — the perpetrators and instigators of such outrages will eventually be held accountable for their crimes,” said Jan Kubis, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General.

The principle of distinction was a customary norm of international humanitarian law. Intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population amounts to a war crime. UNAMA has documented an increase in the targeting of government and elected officials over the past six months, he added.

In Islamabad, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the incident that resulted in the loss of precious lives and injuries to many others.

In a condolence message to the members of the bereaved family, the president prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and a speedy recovery of the wounded.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in eternal peace and grant fortitude to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss.

Meawhile, European Union Special Representative Ambassador Vygaudas U?ackas said the targetted killings were unacceptable. He expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims, and whished the injured a speedy recovery.
