KABUL): A man in the Afghan National Army (ANA) uniform opened fire on foreign soldiers, injuring two of them, in northern Faryab province on Monday, an official said.
The attacker who shot at soldiers on a US military base in the Ghormach district was also killed in retaliatory fire at about 8:30 am, an Afghan army official told Pajhwok Afghan News.
A delegation had been sent to the area to investigate the shooting, said the 209th Shaheen Military Corps spokesman, Maj. Mohammad Raza.
A statement from the ISAF. ISAF troops returned fire, killing the shooter.
There were no ISAF fatalities. Afghan and coalition officials are investigating the incident, according to the statement.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed the attacker was loyal to the rebel movement. Four American soldiers were killed on the military base in Ghormach, he added.
On Sunday, an individual wearing an Afghan National Security Force uniform turned his weapon against ISAF-contracted civilian employees in western Herat, killing three of them.
“The individual who fired on the ISAF-contracted civilian employees was killed during the engagement. The incident is currently under investigation,” added ISAF.
There have been 20 green-on-blue since January, killing 27 foreign soldiers. Last year, there were 21 insider attacks that killed 35 foreign troops.
NATO commanders have downplayed most episodes as the work of disgruntled soldiers, rather than Taliban’s infiltration into Afghan security forces.
