KANDAHAR CITY (PAN movement.

The Afghan-led military operation, backed by International Security Assistance Force (ISAF soldiers will extend medical assistance to their Afghan partners and help defuse roadside bombs.

The decision came during a meeting at the Afghan National Army’s 205th Military Corps in Kandahar City. The deputy governor, the ISAF commander for the southern zone and Afghan security officials were in attendance.

Corps Commander Gen. Abdul Hamid told Pajhwok Afghan News the offensive — codenamed Naveed (Good News) — would focus on clearing restive northern districts of militants and paving the way for security transition in the province.

Deputy Governor Abdul Qayyum Patial acknowledged little attention was paid to the volatile towns in the past. As a result, the guerrillas found a foothold in the areas where civilian casualties in roadside bombings posed a major challenge to security personnel, he added.
